The Lake Hayes Triathlon is New Zealand’s oldest surviving triathlon, first held in 1983. This biannual triathlon consists of a 750 metre swim (or 4km paddle), 20km bike, 5km off-road run, situated in and around the beautiful and iconic Lake Hayes.
Held in the Christmas and Easter holiday breaks each year, the event has fostered the growth of Summer Triathlon over the years, and its history is made more remarkable by the caliber of entrants that have gone on to become household names in the sport throughout the world.
Many top athletes, as well as weekend warriors and first timers, love the laid-back holiday atmosphere.
This low-key triathlon has been a cornerstone of much larger events in the New Zealand triathlon calendar, in the past doubling as the New Zealand National Championships, the Oceania Championships, and the World Championships.
